The PA Announcer Still Has Work To Do
from Sean Fitz-Gerald of The Athletic,
Mike Ross, the voice of the Maple Leafs, spent time working in Toronto’s playoff bubble last year, and he was told the public address voice maintains a sense of routine for players, even in abnormal times.
The in-arena game script has changed — the Kiss Cam had probably run its course, anyway, before the pandemic arrived — but the essential elements remain. Ross still did player introductions, and he still announces the penalties and goals.
“I understood pretty quickly that part of it was also to bring a little bit of normalcy to the players,” said Ross. “They’re so used to certain sounds and certain elements being there, that it was about bringing everything that I would normally bring to a game for them, as well — to bring a little bit of that normalcy.”
