Chicago Blackhawks Sign Cameron Schilling

The Chicago Blackhawks have announced that they have agreed to terms with defeneseman Cameron Schilling.

Before joining the Washing Capitals as an undrafted free agent, Schilling played for the USHL Indiana Ice and for Miami College of the CCHA. Schilling played four years at Miami, scoring eights goals along with 49 assists in 144 games. Schilling has appeared in just six NHL games, registering zero points and four penalty minutes. In 210 AHL games with the Hersey Bears, the 26-year-old defeneseman has tallied 13 goals, 27 assists and 227 penalty minutes.

With the Blackhawks looking at a depleted defensive unit, the team figures to tap into their young AHL talent. Trevor Van Riemsdyk, Ville Pokka, Stephen Johns, and Viktor Svedberg all seem ticketed for at least some NHL ice time this year, so Schilling slots in as AHL depth at the current moment. Hockey’s Future had this to say about Schilling:

Schilling is a meat and potatoes styled, defense-first defenseman with little in the way of offensive upside. He possesses good vision and a decently hard shot. He is responsible first and foremost and will opt to make the safe play rather than the risky one. Schilling won’t draw a lot of attention for his play but more often that not that is a good thing.
