Red Wings Re-Sign Mitch Callahan

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Mitch Callahan to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced Thursday. The deal pays him $600,000 at the NHL level and $175,000 in the AHL, according to Helene St. James.

The soon-to-be 25-year-old right wing grabbed 62 games with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins last season and scored 19 goals, which ranked fourth on the team, and 13 assists.

Since making his pro debut in the 2011-12 season, the California-native has logged 299 games with the Griffins, posting 78 goals and 143 points. He’s played one NHL game in his career, which came during the 2013-14 season.

The 2009 6th round selection (180th overall) came out of the Kelowna Rockets system in the WHL and has a history of winning behind him. He was a part of the Griffins’ 2013 Calder Cup team, won a WHL championship with the Rockets and grabbed a bronze medal as a part of Team USA at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he registered one goal in six games.
