Rangers’ Carl Klingberg Headed to KHL

New York Rangers forward and former Winnipeg Jets draft pick Carl Klingberg is leaving the Rangers to play for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the KHL.

Klingberg was an early 2nd round draft pick for the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009 (34th overall) and came highly touted. Since moving from the SHL to North American hockey in the 2010-11 season, he’s found his way into a total of 12 NHL games, scoring just a single goal with no assists. However, he’s had some success at the AHL level, playing 269 career games with 66 goals and 78 assists.

This season, Klingberg was traded from the Jets to the Rangers in a deal that brought Lee Stempniak to Winnipeg. Klingberg never played a game with the Rangers and spent his time with their AHL affiliate. In 64 games last year, split between the Hartford Wolf Pack and St. Johns IceCaps, he posted 17 goals and 24 assists, along with 45 penalty minutes.
