Greg Pateryn, Great Match For Canadiens Defense
It has been a busy off season thus far for the Montreal Canadiens General Manager Marc Bergevin and July 1st, which marked the beginning of the signing of free agents, was no exception. Marc Bergevin extended the contract of defenseman Greg Pateryn for another 2 years. Pateryn has been with the Habs for just over 3 years now. Greg Pateryn was born Gregory Stephen Pateryn on June 20th, 1990 in the United States of America – Sterling Heights, Michigan, to be exact. Greg began his hockey career in a junior league and played for the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets of the USHL.
During the 2007/2008 season he played 60 games while posting 3 goals, 24 assists, for 27 points. In college, at the University of Michigan, Greg played in the CCHA for the Wolverines. In 4 years at the college level, Greg’s best season was in 2010/2011 where he played 40 games while posting 3 goals, 14 assists, for 17 points.
Greg Pateryn was then drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in June of 2008. In July 2008, Greg Pateryn was traded to the Montreal Canadiens along with a 2nd round draft pick in 2010. In return, the Maple Leafs received Mikhail Grabovski from the Habs. The Canadiens then signed Greg Pateryn to an entry level contract for 2 years. Greg played mostly in the minors for the Montreal Canadiens minor hockey league affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs. His first game in the NHL was played in the 2012/13 season. During 2013, Pateryn had his best season with the Bulldogs where he played 68 games and posted 15 goals, 19 assists, for 34 points.
Greg Pateryn is a right handed defensive shooter and can add some depth to the Canadiens’ defense. Pateryn’s height and weight are a definite asset to the Habs’ defensive core and he makes great use of this fact. Greg is 6’2″ and weighs approximately 222 lbs (188cm/101kg) which speaks volumes when it comes to the physical side of his style of play as he can deliver quite a solid hit. The Montreal Canadiens have made a good choice in extending the contract of defenseman Greg Pateryn for another 2 years.
