It is said by pretty much everyone that the Montreal Canadiens need to address scoring. But do they really have too? I don’t think so.

With the way the NHL is today, it is very hard to get those big superstars that can score 30 goals per season. Teams must build from the draft, and that’s exactly what General Manager Marc Bergevin has done.

A very good example of this would be Brendan Gallagher – a 5th round pick in 2010 and Alex Galchenyuk – a 3rd overall pick in 2012. Both Gallagher and Galchenyuk  are going into their 4th year of professional hockey, and each of them have been progressing at a rapid speed, season after season.

In Gallagher’s first season with the Habs he had just 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points in only 44 games played. Just this past season, Gallagher had 24 goals with 47 points in 82 games. At the pace he is going, he will hit 30 goals in no time. That would make two Montreal Canadiens players with 30 plus goals along side Max Pacioretty.

While Pacioretty is always the leader when it comes to the goal scoring, the fight for second place has grown by a lot. With only two 20 plus goals scorers on the team in 2013-14, the Habs doubled that number in 2014-15 with four. The Habs will look to increase on that number next year with the emergence of a young rookie named Sven Andrighetto. The Canadiens are still missing a right winger for the second line thanks to the buyout of PA Parenteau. Many believe that Bergevin is holding that spot for a rookie.

Andrighetto played 12 games with the Habs last year and recorded 2 goals and 1 assist. It is worth noting that he got his 3 points in the first 3 games of the 12-game stint playing in the top 6 alongside veteran Tomas Plekanec. With the injured players returning, it left Andrighetto on the 4th line where his minutes disappeared. He was later sent back down to the Hamilton Bulldogs.

My guess is that Andrighetto will get somewhere within 15 to 20 goals as a rookie. With Gallagher and Galchenyuk getting better and better every season, and the emergence a scoring gifted winger, the Habs don’t need to press the panic button and make a trade that could jeopardize our future, or sign a declining free agent. Bergevin clearly knows what he is doing, and will lead the Montreal Canadiens to their 25th Stanley Cup!
