Trade Deadline Recap For The Habs: Master Of Minor Moves

Now that the most boring trade deadline in NHL history is finally over, we can take a look at the work accomplished by general manager Marc Bergevin to improve his team.

After trading impending UFAs Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann for youngster Phillip Danault and a 2nd round draft pick to the Chicago Blackhawks, Marc Bergevin was fairly quiet today, grabbing enforcer Mike Brown off waivers and trading party boy Devante Smith-Pelly to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for disappointing prospect Stefan Matteau.

The uneventful day saw no big trade by Bergevin to improve the top-six or the defensive depth. With Tom Gilbert out for the remainder of the season with a lower-body injury, it was not longer possible for the organization to trade the soon-to-be veteran UFA to a contender.

Other trade assets such as Nathan Beaulieu, Lars Eller or even David Desharnais remained with the team, which is still desperately trying to make the playoffs despite less-than-positive odds. The team currently has a 10.2% of making the playoffs (prior to tonight’s game in San Jose), and trailing the eight-seed Pittsburgh Penguins by five points. The Penguins also have two games in hand over the Canadiens.

With a 13-point lead over the last-place Toronto Maple Leafs, it will be hard for the Habs to land a top-three draft pick in 2016, so any hope of properly tanking is now long gone following the last stretch of seven points over the past four games.

With Carey Price practicing in full gear today, the organization must hope the All-Star netminder makes a return to propel the Habs into the thick of the playoff race in March and April.

While Danault and Matteau are good prospects, they are not known for their offensive contribution, which is what is sorely lacking on the team’s top two lines. The team also called up former first-round draft pick Michael McCarron for the remainder of the season.

With Sven Andrighetto finally finding his niche alongside Alex Galchenyuk and Lars Eller on the team’s second line, we can at least conclude the Habs are going with the kids to end the season.

However, Marc Bergevin failed to address two problems: the lack of scoring up front and the acquisition of more draft picks for the upcoming seasons in order to replenish the farm system.
