The Off-Season Game Plan

The Montreal Canadiens will have to get busy if they want to regain that winning touch they created at the start of the roller coaster ride of 2015-2016 season.

So first, let’s talk about what the Canadiens have already done since playing their final game. Right out the gate Marc Bergevin did not waste any time changing things up, announcing that coaching consultant Craig Ramsey will not be coming back season. However, Bergevin also ensured Michel Therrien and co. would be back.

In the first week  of May, Bergevin also signed Finnish phenom prospect Artturi Lehkonen and Czech standout Martin Reway. The general manager made other big news recently by bringing in ex-Hab and two-time Stanley Cup winner Kirk Muller behind the bench as associate coach. Muller spent the last 2 seasons as an assistant coach in St.Louis.

The Draft

With all that being said, lets move on to what I believe Bergevin should do this off-season, starting with the NHL Entry Draft. The Canadiens currently hold the 9th, 39th and 45th picks in the first two rounds. I would like to see Bergevin make a move with the Oilers for the 4th overall pick. Adding a player like Pierre-Luc Dubois or Matthew Tkachuk would benefit the Habs greatly. However, if Bergevin can’t make that happen I would like to see the Habs take Clayton Keller or big centre Logan Brown with the 9th pick. With the 39th  and 45th pick it, while it obviously depends on who is still available, I would like to see the Canadiens pick Samuel Girard, Adam Mascherin or Nathan Bastien. All have great skill, and  I believe will play big roles with their future clubs.

Free Agent Frenzy

July 1st cant come soon enough, with the likes of Steven Stamkos, Loui Eriksson, Keith Yandle and Kyle Okposo available it will be one of the most exciting days in the hockey world.  As for Bergevin, I anticipate it will be a busy day. The way I – and many others – see it, the Canadiens are missing two top-six players:

Current Top Six

Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher

______-Plekanec-________

To secure the left side, I predict/believe Habs will/should sign, LW Mikkel Boedker for 3YRS, $5M AAV. I also predict/believe the Canadiens will sign , RW Radim Vrabata for 1YR, $2.5M AAV.

The New Top Six

Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher

Boedker-Plekanec-Vrbata

Boedker puts points on the board, he can score just as good as he can make make plays. The Canadiens desperatly need extra scoring, and he would be the best fit.

Vrbata may be a strange signing after to a horrible season in which he only put up 27 points, however, he was with a horrible Canacks team and battled through injury for part of the season. Vrbata’s value is at an all time low and Bergevin might be able to take advantage and hit a home run.

These are just my thoughts on what could happen in the near future, let me know what you guys think!
