The Rangers drafted Kovacs with the 62nd overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. The club will pay him an NHL salary of $742,500 in 2016-17 and 2017-18 and $925,000 in 2018-19. There will be games played bonuses included in his deal.
Kovacs stood out at the team’s prospect development camp this past week with his offensive flair and goal-scoring capabilities.
The 20-year-old forward played the majority of the 2015-16 season with AIK of the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s second highest professional hockey league, tallying 21 goals and 34 points in 44 games with a plus-two rating. He played in AIK on loan from the Swedish Hockey League’s Rögle BK. He skated in four games with Rögle BK and logged one point.
Kovacs is a balanced forward who can play both ends of the ice. He has a hard and accurate shot and plays a solid puck possession game.
After a great showing in prospect camp, Kovacs could be a contender to make the NHL roster in September’s training camp. If not, it won’t hurt him to get more seasoning with the Hartford Wolfpack in the American Hockey League.
