The deal will pay Manning $950,000 in 2016-17 and $1 million in 2017-18, according to GeneralFanager.com. It is a one-way contract.
Manning is coming off of his first full season in the NHL, in which he tallied seven points and a plus-two rating in 56 games. He had one assist in six playoff games.
The 26-year-old served as the team’s sixth/seventh defenseman this past season, and with the likely addition of 2015 first round draft pick Ivan Provorov, he could be forced into even less playing time this upcoming season.
The Flyers signed Brandon Manning as an undrafted free agent in November of 2010. The defenseman played parts of four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Chilliwack Bruins prior to the team’s relocation to Victoria, British Columbia. In 200 games, he tallied 136 points.
Since turning pro in 2011, he has netted 12 points in 77 NHL games and 114 points in 244 AHL games.
Manning plays a sound two-way game and is a good puck mover. He can also play an effective physical game and racks up a lot of penalty minutes in the process.
Philadelphia will have a crowded blue line this season with Manning, Provorov and Andrew MacDonald vying for spots alongside Michael Del Zotto, Shayne Gostisbehere, Radko Gudas, Nick Schultz and Mark Streit.
