Peters is entering the final year of his initial three-year contract with the club. His extension will kick in for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.
Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis had the following statement in the team’s press release on Wednesday.
Bill is a talented, young coach in the National Hockey League,” said Francis. “We are happy that he has made a commitment to the Hurricanes, and that he will be a major part of the team continuing to grow.
Bill Peters was named the team’s head coach on June 19, 2014, and has since led the Canes to a 65-72-27 record.
He has been a crucial part of the team’s much-improved defense over the past couple of seasons, grooming young blueliners Justin Faulk, Noah Hanifin, Jaccob Slavin and Brett Pesce.
His commitment to smart play in all areas led to top-five finishes in a number of analytical categories this past season. The team also finished fifth in shot suppression in 2015-16.
The Alberta native served as head coach for Team Canada at this year’s IIHF World Championships, leading his home nation to a second straight gold medal in the tournament. He will be an assistant coach on Canada’s coaching staff in September’s World Cup of Hockey.
Peters was an assistant coach under Mike Babcock with the Detroit Red Wings prior to joining the Canes, and he will be on Babcock’s staff again for the World Cup.
Bill Peters has been a perfect fit for the Hurricanes over the last two seasons, which made signing him to an extension a no-brainer. The Hurricanes project to be playoff contenders this upcoming season.
