The Forum: Should Marc Bergevin Go All In This Year?
Inspired by the below Twitter exchange between our own CJ Casselman and CTV’s Brian Wilde, we ask our contributors if they think Marc Bergevin should take an “all in” approach to the Canadiens this season?
Me too. This roster is as close as MTL has been. Now is THE chance. Must get 2C tho. Must or forget it. https://t.co/w8d3FkZYCc

Kyle Roussel (@kyleroussel) If all in means rebooting the team’s strategy (whether by forcing Therrien or replacing him), then yes. If it means throwing the kitchen sink at pieces to the puzzle, then no. Therrien has shown nothing other than an ability to dumb down talent. I would say yes in a heartbeat if I had any faith in this team’s ability to hack it with the real contenders, but I do not.
This team has too many issues in my view. Archaic strategy, underperforming skaters, and a simmering captaincy controversy that is a couple of unproductive months away from critical mass.
I wish I could say otherwise but I can’t help but feel that despite their qualities, this organization is still its own worst enemy.
Ian Boisvert (@BoisvertIan) – I mean, if Bergevin isn’t trying to make this team a Cup contender, what is he doing? The Subban trade was a signal, at least to me, that Bergevin thinks this team is in win-now mode. We all found this approach to be flawed, but here we are. The core of this team is in its prime, and the time to strike is now.
The term “cup window” is used a lot, and I honestly think the Canadiens have about two years after this one to cash in. After that, the salary cap gets screwy with Price and Pacioretty hitting UFA. Plus, Plekanec and Markov will be done by then, and who knows what Weber will look like in two years. The fact that Plekanec and Markov are still on the Habs shows that he is “all in,” in that the success of this team means so much that letting rookies figure out would be detrimental. The same goes for Desharnais.
So I guess this question is code for “who is Montreal going to add or subtract before the trade deadline?” I really see the Habs struggling into January once again. It is at this point Bergevin makes a panic trade instead of a coaching change, and Montreal will continue to slide.
Is Bergevin “all in” on this team? You bet. But I think he’s lined up to make a big mistake in the coming months.
Zach Vanasse (@ZachDrops Tweets) – If Bergevin is considering going all in, I would think he should dive in right now. To my mind, all in means finding a legitimate second line centre and with Galchenyuk out for a stretch there’s some need for immediacy to at least somewhat plug that now gaping hole down the middle. I have no idea what the Montreal brain trust is thinking these days, but if it were me and I was looking to get aggressive, I’d start shopping immediately.
