The Forum: Mid-Season Rule Change
The KHL announced earlier this week, in the middle of its season, that it was switching to a 3-on-3 overtime format as of December 15. It’s kind of crazy to make such a dramatic rule change midway through the season, but also kind of refreshing to see if you’re accustomed to the glacial NHL.
So, this week we asked our panel of contributors if they could make any change to NHL rules effective immediately, what would it be?
Ian Boisvet (@BoisvertIan) – My patience with the coach’s challenge has run out entirely, so I would eliminate that as quickly as possible. For example, the overtime winner against Boston was reviewed for a potential offside, and the ruling from the officials and from the War Room in Toronto was nothing short of a defeated shrug: because it was inconclusive, the goal stands and Boston gains the extra point.
Not to mention the fact that goaltender interference calls seem to be a coin flip. If there were possible ways to improve the coach’s challenge in the future, I’d be all for it. But right now, it seems as though the league doesn’t really care if the call is right.
A close second would be to ditch the shootout. Continuous 3-on-3 is the only solution. Some of the overtimes solve nothing because teams don’t want to risk losing and would rather sneak into a shootout. Baseball games don’t end with home run derbies. Football games don’t end with kicking competitions. Hockey games shouldn’t end with shootouts.
Kyle Roussel (@kyleroussel) – As a fan of a team with a great puck-moving goaltender, I want that trapezoid gone, pronto.
Dennis Kane (@denniskane) – They could ease up a bit on the puck over the glass ruling. It can be a pretty chintzy penalty sometimes.
Claudio D’Andrea (@cdybtor) – If it had to be one rule, then let it be the puck over the glass. The NHL should treat that the same way it does an icing infraction — the face-off comes back into their zone — rather than a penalty. It’s a ludicrous penalty.
Zach Vanasse (@ZachDropsTweets) – I mean, if I’ve got free reign on the rules I’m going to take Kyle’s lead here and try to benefit the Montreal Canadiens the most. Removing the trapezoid would be huge for the Habs, since I’m pretty confident at least 30% of the Canadiens effective offensive pushes are started by Carey Price as is. And after the pummeling he laid on Kyle Palmieri last week, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Price in fact does have to do everything for the Montreal Canadiens. With all of this in mind, I propose removing the rule that states goalies can’t participate in the play in any manner when beyond the centre line in the offesnive zone. I’ve got no statistical proof so I’m going with my gut on this one, but I’m pretty much convinced that if Price was permitted to join the power play, or just join a rush in general, the Canadiens offensive threat would immediately be twice to three times as potent. Carey Price is already the best player in the NHL, let’s find out if he can also be the best skater.
