Chorney likely will enter training camp as the seventh defenseman on the Washington depth chart and should compete for playing time with Nate Schmidt and Dmitry Orlov. The 28-year-old appeared in seven regular-season and five postseason games for the Penguins last season, bringing his career total of NHL regular-season appearances to 68.
He did not record a point and was a minus-1 during the season and also did not score while picking up two penalty minutes in the playoffs. Chorney appeared in 62 AHL games last year for Wilkes Barre/Scranton, notching four goals, 15 assists and 42 PIMs to go along with a sparkling plus-26. In six AHL playoff games he recorded a goal and an assist.
Prior to his stint in the Pens’ organization, Chorney played parts of five NHL seasons with Edmonton and St. Louis. He appeared in a career-best 42 games posting three assists, 12 PIMs and a minus-21 in 2009-10 for Edmonton. Since then he has not appeared in more than 12 NHL games in a season, and his career NHL numbers are 1-6-7 with 16 PIMS in 68 appearances.
