Capitals Re-sign UFA Galiev
The Washington Capitals have signed restricted free agent Stanislav Galiev to a two-year, $1.15 million contract, the team announced on Wednesday.
Galiev appeared in two games with the team late last season, and is expected to compete for a roster spot in training camp. The contract is two way in the first year and one way in year two, further indication of the team’s belief that he will be able to play at the NHL level in the near future.
The 23-year-old native of Moscow scored one NHL goal, April 11 against the Rangers, in his two appearances with the Caps last season. At Hersey he recorded a career-best 25 goals and 20 assists in 67 games before the late-season call up. He led the AHL in power-play goals, and his 25 markers tied for the Bears’ team lead.
It is believed that Galiev could compete for a top-six forward spot for the Caps this year if the team is unable to lure a free agent to D.C. or to make a trade for a player to fill that role.
