Justin Peters Undergoes Surgery, Will Be at Camp

Washington Capitals goaltender Justin Peters underwent knee surgery on Monday, the team announced Tuesday.

According to the team, the surgery was successful and they expect Peters to be ready for training camp in September.

In his first season with the Capitals, Peters played 12 games, accumulating a 3-6-1 record with an .881 all situation save percentage, an .887 even strength save percentage and a .902 adjusted save percentage.

Prior to joining the Capitals, Peters saw five seasons of action with the Carolina Hurricanes, who drafted him in the second round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (38th overall).

Peters rough year last season saw him drop from the backup to third string when push came to shove. When Braden Holtby went out with an injury, the Capitals turned to young Philipp Grubauer and not Peters to take on the workload. Like last season, Peters is likely the backup, but in the service of making sure that Grubauer gets as many starts as possible in the AHL and not because the team necessarily rates him higher than Grubauer.

As added insurance, the Capitals also signed veteran netminder Dan Ellis to a one-year contract this summer.

Peters is in the final year of a two-year contract that carries an AAV of $950,000.
