Barberio has appeared in six games so far this season, recording one assist and four penalty minutes.
While unconfirmed, the demotion of Barberio may indicate that Nathan Beaulieu is ready to return from injury.
Beaulieu has been injured since Nov. 22, when he was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure during a game against the Ottawa Senators.
The Canadiens next game is Thursday at home against the New Jersey Devils.
