Los Angeles Kings Hire Dave Lowry as Assistant Coach

The Los Angeles Kings have hired Dave Lowry as an assistant coach, the team announced Tuesday. The news comes after a busy offseason for the Kings who have completely reconstructed their front office with changes to their head coach, general manager and president positions, among others. Lowry will join the team and bring a loaded resume full of coaching experience at the WHL, NHL and international levels.

Lowry, a veteran of over 1,000 NHL games, has experienced that ranging beyond just the duties of a coach. With knowledge of the game from his playing days and his time coaching, the Kings are hoping that Lowry can help in the process of returning their franchise to their winning ways that the city came to know and love as recently as 2015-16. Kings’ newly named head coach John Stevens said as much when discussing the hiring.

“Dave has a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach and we’re excited to have him join our team,” Stevens said. “He played over 1,000 games in the NHL and was a great teammate as a player. As a coach, he’s really detailed, he relates well with players and he is driven to win.”

Lowry Bring Experience

Lowry’s coaching resume ranges across multiple leagues and multiple franchises. He found himself serving as a head coach, associate head coach and assistant coach at different times with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, advancing to the WHL Finals in 2009 in his only season as the head coach of the club. His most recent stint in the NHL came with the Calgary Flames where he spent nearly a decade in the organization in a variety of roles. He was an assistant coach from 2009 until 2012. prior to re-joining the WHL as the head coach of the Victoria Royals. Lowry also has experience at the international level as the head coach of the Canadian World Juniors squad in 2016.

Appreciative of the opportunity, Lowry expressed his excitement to rejoin the NHL as a member of the Kings’ coaching staff:

I am very excited to join the Kings and John Stevens’ coaching staff. I have a great deal of familiarity with the Kings and the way they help prepare and develop players in particular and I believe I have a good understanding and appreciation of the professionalism of the LA Kings on the whole.”

Lowry also made sure to express his appreciation for his WHL club for the opportunity they afforded him over the last few years.

“I am also appreciative of the time I have spent with the Victoria Royals including Graham Lee as the owner, Cameron Hope as the general manager and my entire staff in Victoria.

With a new regime comes new faces. For the Kings, Lowry was simply the man for the job given his experience and success at various levels in hockey. Lowry becomes another big name added to a coaching staff Tuesday at the New York Islanders hired former NHL player and two-time Stanley Cup Champion Scott Gomez to their staff as well.
