Andre Benoit Signs 1-Year Pact With St. Louis

The St. Louis Blues have signed defenseman Andre Benoit to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced on Monday.

Benoit played 59 games with the Buffalo Sabres last season, potting one goal and eight assists. It was the 31-year-old defender’s third full season, playing for the Ottawa Senators in the lockout-shortened season and grabbing 79 games with the Colorado Avalanche the season after that.

It was that season with the Avalanche where he posted career highs in goals with seven and assists with 21.

The Blues have one of the deepest blue lines in the NHL, meaning that it could be difficult for Benoit to see NHL action this season. Though, with the Blues retooling a little — trading T.J. Oshie, rumored shopping of Kevin Shattenkirk, the exit of Barret Jackman, not to mention the depth signing of Peter Harrold as well — there could be space for Benoit if the Blues make more drastic moves over the summer. It shouldn’t be expected, but it doesn’t appear to be an option that is off the table.
