Devin Setoguchi Suspended Five Games in NLA

Former NHLer Devin Setoguchi has found himself suspended five games in the Swiss National League A (NLA) for delivering a massive hit to the head of the SCL Tigers’ Jordy Murray on November 12. Additionally, he was fined CHF 2,350, according to Swiss Hockey News.

The play, which can be seen here, has Setoguchi turning and running Murray, tossing him into the air violently.

The loss of Setoguchi will be a blow to HC Davos, who sits in fourth place in the NLA. He’s a good shot from being a superstar for the team, but he’s been reliable over his short time there, posting three goals and three assists through seven games.

Setoguchi was something a feel-good story over the summer in North America, where it was reported that he’d cleaned up and was looking to get his game back on track.

The Toronto Maple Leafs gave Setoguchi a tryout contract for training camp and he had moments where many were impressed. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough and the Leafs released him.

Setoguchi has played 471 career NHL games, scoring 127 goals and 122 assists, peaking early on with the San Jose Sharks, where he had a 30-goal season and two 20-goal seasons before being traded to the Minnesota Wild.

The 8th overall pick in the 2005 NHL draft never crossed 20 goals again in his NHL career, which saw him play a season with the Winnipeg Jets after the Wild and then move onto the Calgary Flames, where he spent most of the season in the American League.
