Matt Greene Out Indefinitely

After getting just three games this season, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Matt Greene will require shoulder surgery and be out indefinitely, according to Kings Insider Jon Rosen.

The surgery is scheduled for Thursday, following an MRI that revealed there was damage which would require surgery. It is expected to be a “long-term recovery.” There had previously been hope that this wouldn’t require surgery, which is likely why he’s been out nearly two months before the announcement of surgery.

Greene was placed on injured reserve back on October 23 and it was retroactive to October 13. At that time coach Darryl Sutter said that the injury was in the “same area” as a shoulder injured that Greene suffered during a September 27 preseason match.

While it doesn’t effect the injury situation at all, Rosen reports that the team has not placed Greene on long-term injured reserve, but still could should that become advantageous to their cap situation.

Greene is in his eighth year with the Kings organization, playing 438 games for Los Angeles on the heels of a few seasons in Edmonton where he suited up for 151 games. He has 16 career goals and 62 assists.

In Greene’s absence, Jeff Carter has taken over his alternate captain duties.
