Flyers Extend Colin McDonald

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed 31-year-old winger Colin McDonald to a two-year, two-way contract extension, the team announced Sunday.

The deal carries a $625,000 value at the NHL level next season and a $650,000 value the following season, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

McDonald has spent most of his time this year, his first in the organization, playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He’s serving as captain of the American League squad, less the five NHL games he’s been called up for. While he hasn’t been a big impact player in the NHL, he’s been valuable in the AHL, putting up 21 points in 34 games.

Having a player they believe can lead their AHL squad and teach young players should have some value with a load of highly talented prospects — Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny among them — close to making the jump into the pro ranks.
