Surgery for Hertl, Ramo Healthy & More News

Monday night, San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson announced that forward Tomas Hertl will undergo a “minor procedure” following a knee sprain he suffered on Nov. 17.

“Hertl will undergo a minor procedure [Tuesday] under the direction of the Kaiser Permanente medical team,” Wilson said in a statement. “Following the procedure, Hertl will proceed with his rehabilitation schedule in San Jose.”

The team has not given a timetable for Hertl’s recovery and currently lists him as out indefinitely. He has previously missed time with an injury to his right knee as well.

Through 17 games this season, Hertl has four goals and nine points.

Lack Hits IR

Carolina goaltender Eddie Lack has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a concussion during practice Monday. In response, the Hurricanes have recalled AHLer Michael Leighton on an emergency basis.

For two years many have expected Lack to grab the reins in Carolina, but he’s been unable to do so when the opportunity presents itself and his chances have been limited this season with Cam Ward looking like a new man. Through 13 games, Ward has posted a .916 save percentage.

Lack has started four games and appeared in five this season, posting an .856 save percentage.

Ramo Close

Karri Ramo is close to getting medical clearance to play again, reports Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.

Ramo has been working hard on rehabbing his surgically repaired knee and has even recently been seen taking in a practice with the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, there was no indication the team was giving him a look for a place with the organization. They were just helping him get back on his feet due to personal connections there.

Once he gets clearance to play again he could become an attractive depth option for many teams, as he remains a free agent.

Buchnevich Back(nevich) Soon

Rangers rookie Pavel Buchnevich hasn’t had much time to prove what he can bring to the NHL. The 21-year-old has four goals and eight points through 10 games but has been sidelined with a back injury since Nov. 12.

Monday, coach Alain Vigneault gave an update on his status, telling the media that Buchnevich’s MRI revealed “no structural” damage. He’s currently working to “reinforce” his core, rehabbing for two-to-three weeks. “There should be no issues” after that, says Vigneault.

Roadrunners Postpone Games

As Tucson Roadrunners captain Craig Cunningham continues to recover from a cardiac incident that occurred during the warm-ups for Saturday’s game, the team is standing by him, as are many around the league. The latest update from the team was that he’s in critical, but stable condition.

As the team, family and friends wait to see what happens, the team won’t be playing. They have postponed Tuesday and Wednesday’s games.

Guentzel’s Debut

Pittsburgh Penguins rookie and former University of Nebraska-Omaha forward Jake Guentzel made his debut Monday night. It went pretty well for him personally. He scored on his first NHL shot and exited the first period with a pair of goals.

The reaction of his parents was legendary.

Those were the only two goals the team scored en route to a 5-2 loss at the hands of the Rangers.

Preds and Bolts Brawl

The Predators and Lightning had a physical match Monday that devolved into some dirty hits and battles. The peak might have been a blindside hit from Ryan Ellis on J.T. Brown. Unfortunately for Ellis, Brown finished the play on top of Ellis. He delivered a handful of unanswered blows on Ellis and it ignited a real donnybrook on the ice.

After the game, Brian Boyle called the hit “extremely dirty.”
